Based in Athens, John writes and presents news, features and analysis with a particular focus on the war in Ukraine. He previously worked for CNN and has contributed to publications including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Liberties Journal, the TLS, The Critic, The American Scholar and the Weekly Standard. After working at CNN International from 1994 to 1999, John returned to Greece to lead the Athens News, an English-language daily. Over the following decade, he directed its transition to a weekly format while focusing on Greece’s economic integration with the EU, challenges related to transparency and meritocracy, the Athens 2004 Olympics, the emerging issue of mass migration and environmental concerns. Since 2012, John has worked as Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Athens, where he has reported on the Eurozone crisis, the immigration crisis and ongoing Greek-Turkish tensions. His coverage now extends to Albania, North Macedonia, Cyprus, and other countries in the region and he writes extensively on the war in Ukraine.
